What is Steampunk Attire?

Steampunk fashion is a retro futuristic subculture that has no set guidelines or rules; however, most Steampunk outfits tend to synthesize modern and futuristic style with influences from the Victorian era such as corsets, waistcoats, military jackets, top hats, etc... Many Steampunk fashion outfits also include a post-apocalyptic flavor, with ragged edges and apocalyptic accessories such as gas masks and flying goggles. Although the term Steampunk was first coined as a literary genre in the late 1980s, it soon began to form its own fashion movement, becoming more mainstream around 2005. Today, Steampunk remains a core fashion subculture and is closely associated with large scale annual events like TeslaCon in Wisconsin or the Burning Man Festival in the Nevada Desert.
